Abstract

Collecting Anastasios's chief writings on mission, this volume articulates for all Christians a markedly Orthodox theological justification for mission in a tradition that often has shunned it. Distinctively bringing together Archbishop Anastasios's specific and prolonged experience with and respect for other religious traditions and his long work in missionary settings, the volume rebukes the idea that mission is incompatible with genuine respect for other traditions. It argues instead for the notion that apostolicity and mission are theologically rooted in the processions and missions of the Trinity itself; meet a deep, universal, and perennial longing for spiritual depth; and are expressed in genuine sharing of one's Christian convictions with others while addressing their concrete human needs. These themes take on new meaning in Anastasios's most recent experience in Albania a mostly Muslim country, with a new generation unacquainted with Christianity and a legacy of fifty years of explicitly atheist governmental policy.
