Abstract

The Cape Town Commitment is one of the most important documents of evangelical Christianity, which speaks succinctly on many topics. One of those topics is discipleship. The article looks at the mention of the topic of discipleship in the document and then offers a theological review on the topic of the content and importance of discipleship for contemporary evangelical Christianity. After the introduction and the first part, which addresses the topic of discipleship in the Cape Town Commitment, the article offers a theological review on the topic of discipleship. The second part of the article discusses the content and form of discipleship, while the third part explains the importance of discipleship, arguing that discipleship (Mt 28) is a way to achieve the original creative blessing promised to Abraham in Genesis 12. The article concludes that if we want to take seriously the theme of discipleship we should: a) understand that discipleship is not a "voluntary activity" but a means by which God wants to extend his redemptive blessing to all nations; b) return to teaching by example in our churches and theological institutions (church and academic activities are part of discipleship, but they must not be a substitute for teaching by example); c) redeem the term "Christian" in such a way that the term is reserved for those who are "disciples."
