Abstract

In the current article, I shall analyse the Christianisation process bythe European and, to a smaller extent, the Asian Nenets in its political and social context, paying special attention to the dialogue between the aborigenes and the Orthodox missionaries, to the reactions of both parties and to the evolution of the Nenets belief system during the 19th century until the beginning of the 20th century. My main sources are contemporary Russian Orthodox journals, which have been very little used by other researchers, and different reports by scholars and travellers. The more relevant texts I relied on are notes by Veniamin, Sitnikov, Mikhailov and other missionaries and priests involved in evangelisation campaigns, which have been published in the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century.
