Abstract

The introduction of this article explains the title and the meaning of the idea of "new evangelization"; the first part - based on Church documents that deal with this topic - covers the essential points of the "new evangelization" in the light of modern media communication. The second part offers a short historical review of the orientation of the Church's magisterium toward "global social communication", a term that is broader than "mass media". Looking at the historical relationship between the Church and "means of social communication" three tendencies can be seen: 1. in the beginning, the Church views the media in terms of trying to control it and use it only superficially; 2. later, the Church uses media in an increasingly integral way in pastoral care; 3. finally, the Church understands that mass media is a basic element in modern social life and should be imbued with the Gospel message. The third part of the article starts from the Message of Benedict XVI to the people of God given at the Synod of Bishops 2008, where the Holy Father writes that the ways of the Word are not only the ways of missionaries or of Christians who should take their witness onto city streets. They may for the most part be the ways of virtual and informatic communication. In this section the author sketches a framework that should be taken into consideration in pastoral activities of the Church, especially dealing with the new evangelization. Because the topic of mass media is very broad, the conclusion of the article draws attention to some landmarks that should be kept in mind when we use mass media in the pastoral activity of the Church. First of all, social communication cannot replace verbal preaching but can support it. Social communication (media) can, as stated in Communio et progressio, article 125, help the Church in the dynamics of evangelization on three levels: 1. helping the Church to open itself to the modern world; 2. promoting internal dialogue; 3. having in mind the mentality of today's society, media can proclaim the Gospel of salvation in a language that will be understood; starting with the problems and anxieties that confront humankind.
