Abstract

In order to approach the Orthodox understanding and practice of mission, one has to trace the distinct characteristics of Orthodox theology and discern how these characteristics shape the Orthodox perception of mission. My contribution is a theological essay, that is, an essay opting and arguing for the elements from Orthodox tradition that I see as vital and inclusive, in contrast to trends toward cultural propaganda or traditionalist fossilization. This option and argumentation is somehow a manifestation of “theology not so much as a particular content, but as an activity, a process”, in the meaningful words of Professor Stephen Bevans. Here, I think, Bevans meets Georges Florovsky, a prominent Orthodox theologian of the 20th c., who is traditional yet not a traditionalist: "Loyalty to tradition means not only concord with the past, but, in a certain sense, freedom from the past, as from some outward formal criterion. Tradition is not only a protective, conservative principle; it is, primarily, the principle of growth and regeneration".
