Abstract

The present article is devoted to consideration of uniqueness of biblical idea about the Jubilee Year in Christ’s mission and what it contributes to a Church’s social role and tasks in post-soviet context. The article is divided into three sections. In section one we briefly go through meaning and role of Jubilee Year in a context of Israel’s social law. And then, transferring its main components to prophetic tradition of Old (essentially, Is. 56:8 and 61:1-2) and New Testament (Lk. 4:18-19 which is their combined quotation). It gives the foundation for making parallels between Jesus’ motives in Lk.4:18-19 and ideas of the Jubilee Year. In section two there is an attempt to highlight and analyze the principles of Kingdom of God’s mission in ministry of Christ stated by Jubilee’s ideas. Key theses of Jesus’ messianic program in Lk. 4:18-19 considered to be both literal and metaphoric, which broadens specter of their social meaning and application. It shows that realization of Peace and Justice Kingdom is possible only through ministry which covers all society layers. And finally, section three is devoted to modern Church’s application of Jubilee’s motives in Kingdom’s peace-making mission in post-soviet context. By analyzing the Church’s role and task in the perspective of three aspects of Jubilee Year: economic, social and theological, four tasks of modern Church will be stated: critical, constructive, restrictive and motivating.
