During his life William Fetler was a controversial Figure, with supporters praising his accomplishments and detractors vilified him. He was an accomplished revivalist and a powerful speaker, and helped to spread the evangelical faith in Russia and Latvia in spite of many political vicissitudes. Fetler was a pioneer in independent mission work separate from any denominational agency; at the same time he formed several significant Baptist churches. He was without a peer in Christian promotional activity. He left practically no estate, giving everything he had to his mission cause. In spite of his accomplishments and commitment to the mission cause, his zeal and boldness at times outweighed good judgment, undermined relationships, and brought conflict. Critics claimed that as a person he was self-willed and impetuous. In spite of criticism and opposition, he persevered against all obstacles; to the end he maintained a loyal following.
