Abstract

The article discusses ethical foundations of missionary work following the prominent Protestant missiologist Leslie Newbigin. The study offers a new reading of L. Newbigin's work “The open secret”, which is central for his theology of mission. The moral demand for radical openness to one's neighbor arises from reading the Gospel in the light of the development of the ideas of philosophy of E. Levinas. The ethical foundations of mission as a dialogue of representatives of different cultures with an unpredictable result for the development of churches make it possible to overcome an approach to missionary work as a technique. Personal openness in dialogue is possible with an attitude of obedience to God and inspires believers to discover new forms of being church. Emerging local churches with a national identity, in turn, must have openness to the worldwide brotherhood of churches. The unity in diversity is a key feature of the church as a “new humanity”, each specific part of which refuses to absolutize its vision of God, moral standards and church forms, recognizing the sovereignty of God in multiplying church diversity.
