Abstract

This study seeks to address the increasing difficulty some missionaries are finding in funding through traditional Western mission agencies and to investigate whether the decline in Western mission agency numbers is at least partly related to their high support requirements and their funding and deputation system. Additonally, this study investigates the variance in funding levels and methods of foreign missionaries serving in Almaty, Kazakhstan in 2005. Specifically, it investigates the percentage of missionaries sent by churches that are serving outside of mission agencies and looks at differences in funding levels and methods between church-sent and agency-sent missionaries, and between Western and non-Western missionaries. Data were gathered by three means: a survey of missionaries serving in Almaty, Kazakhstan; a survey of Western mission agencies from different countries and a case study of the Korean missionaries serving in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Findings revealed that there was a great variance in funding levels and methods of missionaries serving on the field, and that church-sent missionaries and non-Western missionaries tended to be on less support and with more concentrated support bases than Western agency-sent missionaries. The study concludes that a powerful list of current trends risk leaving Western mission agencies with declining influence in the world of missions unless they radically adjust their funding mechanisms.
