Abstract

The author provides an explanation of the granting of rights to the Roms in terms of inter- and intra-ethnic political competition. Drawing on two years of field research in Slovakia and Macedonia, he presents evidence of a Macedonian interest in Romani support, as well as documenting a general lack of interest in such support in the Slovak Republic. He then examines a disconnect between state-and local-level results in his survey of Romani settlements. In conclusion, he remarks on the applicability of his findings to other cases.
