Abstract

The missionary task is an essential part of the Church’s identity. That is possibly why this topic is ever relevant in the Church. Missiology as a theological discipline has also enjoyed a dynamic development in recent decades. The present article attempts to introduce mission and evangelization in the context of contemporary ecclesiology. One of the dominant concepts of the Church today is the community of disciples. In this perspective, the Gospel proclamation is no longer a matter only for the clergy, but is the task and responsibility of each Christian. In the first part of this text, the basis of missionary vocation is briefly mentioned as seen in the Scriptures. The second part further develops this basis in the light of the Easter transformation of the community of disciples. Various models of mission as they have historically appeared are further introduced in the next part. After such an overview, a detailed look focuses on evangelization as a complex form of mission. In the conclusion, I argue for a personal witness of Christians (to live a ‘fifth gospel’) and active participation in the life of the Church. Only in this way will the Church bear trustful, and always up to date, witness about the truth that saves us.
