Abstract

With a tradition of over 2,000 years, the mission of the Church has not lessened in relevancy today. On the contrary, it has become more urgent than ever, especially in its specific form of so-called ‘New Evangelization’. Over the last two years this phenomenon has been extensively discussed and written about, and many Christian church communities have started putting the New Evangelization in practice very enthusiastically. My paper seeks to introduce the origin of the term ‘New Evangelization’ as well as its theoretical grounds, originating especially in the papal documents - the encyclical ‘Evangelii nuntiandi’ of Pope Paul VI (on the proclamation of the gospel in today’s world), the encyclical ‘Redemptoris missio’ of Pope John Paul II (on the permanent validity of the missionary calling), and the apostolic exhortation ‘Evangelii gaudium’ (‘the joy of the gospel’) of the current Pope Francis I. The New Evangelization and its practical implementation were also dealt with by Pope Benedict XVI, who convened the Synod of Bishops on the New Evangelization in October 2012 in Rome, which elicited a very favorable response in the Christian world. A part of the paper deals with evangelization in the broader sense, including the New Evangelization (if pursued in a milieu where baptized people live who do not practice their faith, as well as those who have been alienated from the Church) and its sub-methods: witness, proclamation, catechesis, liturgy and sacraments, personal contact, street evangelization, popular piety, evangelization by way of the media and arts, small groups, movements, evangelist and animator courses, and evangelization programs. In addition to the New Evangelization, the paper also defines other ways or forms of the mission of the Church, such as a missionary way of being with people, interfaith dialog, Christian communities’ formation, the ecumenical movement, and diakonia.
