Abstract

The paper explores the issue of contemporary mission and its new trends, or the particular methods and challenges of evangelization in the rural and urban areas. In the introduction, the author discusses the transformation of rural areas. Like urban areas, the countryside has also become a “new mission field”, currently undergoing a process of transformation. Among others, the German congress under the title ‘The Countryside at a Time of Change’ by the Renovabis Foundation also dealt with new pastoral challenges. In comparison to the rural environment, the urban environment offers greater opportunities for creativity in evangelization. As some good practical examples, the author lists evangelization activities – events such as ‘The Zone of Christmas Peace’, ‘ACTIVE GARDEN’ and the ‘The Campaign for Jesus’. The paper also includes the personal experience of one of the evangelists, involved in the area of street evangelization both in the rural and urban areas, as well as the author’s personal experience with street evangelization in Bratislava. The current Pope Francis also addresses the issue of urban evangelization. In his apostolic exhortation ‘Evangelii Gaudium’ (2013), he mentions many evangelization challenges, such as the emergence of new urban cultures, multicultural urban settings, major socio-economic inequities among people, individualism, crime rate, and other social-pathological phenomena, while at the same time providing possible solutions based on actual love for people. The author concludes her paper with the topic of social networks and the mass media as a significant evangelization tool of today.
