The paper discusses the Christian understanding of reconciliation. It seeks to formulate a Christian perspective while emphasizing several inherent links related to this notion of reconciliation. The author introduces select elements of Christian reconciliation as well as a heuristic approach with the aim of helping to open up this field. He points out two basic forms of reconciliation as introduced by the New Testament, namely: vertical and horizontal reconciliation. Vertical reconciliation is the reconciliation God works so as to restore humankind to communion with God. Horizontal reconciliation draws upon vertical reconciliation in order to bring about healing in human relations, either between individuals or between groups of human beings. The paper subsequently explores five major features of this notion of reconciliation. The exploration refers to the fact that the Christian understanding of reconciliation can also be transposed to other social relations that do not necessarily have to be Christian in nature, or even part of any faith tradition. In conclusion, the author discusses the issue of cooperation between Christians and those who do not have an identical view of reconciliation, as well as some issues related to working towards reconciliation.
