The paper explores the notion of transforming discipleship as introduced and elaborated by the 14th Conference on World Mission and Evangelism. The main thesis of the paper is that a comprehensive theologically and anthropologically sound understanding of Christian discipleship can enable a more adequate grasp on the role of the church vis-à-vis God’s mission in the world (missio Dei). The paper offers an analysis of several missiologically relevant emphases of such an understanding of Christian discipleship from the perspective of theological anthropology. In particular, it focuses on the motifs of theological rootedness, relationality, contextuality, wholeness, and „joyful kenosis“. In its conclusion, it suggests several particular missiological implications that follow on from the notion under scrutiny.
