Abstract

The article analyzes the contribution of Paul Knitter to the contemporary discussion on religious pluralism, reveals the strengths and weaknesses of his approach. Oriented on a dialogical “openness”, Knitter’s pluralistic model of the theology of religions proceeds from a soteriocentric position. The scholar closely connects the concern for social justice with the problem of the Christian theology of religions and formulates his own correlation model of inter-religious relations, calling for the world’s religions to unite around the criterion of “human well-being” to jointly solve the problems of suffering of the land and its inhabitants. Knitter effectively advocates the suspension of the search for doctrinal unity in the submission to the ethical task, which calls for the promotion of the liberation program.
