Abstract

In this article Ivana Dolejšová (Noble) examines how a theology that wants to take seriously the positive and the negative heritage of different denominations, as well as the search for Christian wholeness and unity, can profit from three significant approaches to language and understanding, to experience, and to certainty, truth and authority. It takes the readers through the hermeneutical method as developed by Heidegger, Gadamer, Ricoeur and applied by Tracy, back to its phenomenological roots in Husserl, but also to how these were recovered in Marion, to the epistemological method in the later Wittgenstein. Finally, using Eagleton’s sixteen definitions of ideology in relation to authority, it asks how, with the help of previous methods, ecumenical theology can prevent its discourse from becoming ideological.
