Abstract

Today's monasticism, regardless of its long history, still poses a question to itself on how much it is permeated and relying on the Gospel. It can happen that old monastic orders during time become depleted of their charisma and start to resemble more like work groups than monastic brotherhood. Monasticism grows out of the Gospel like a radical imitation of Jesus Christ. It is not a following of some dogma but is firstly an imitation of Jesus' life. The content of monasticism is not in the "special" belief but in the special way of Christian living. It's the life of brotherhood of faith, but also of bread and spirit. Today's historical situation, which is specific in many aspects, seeks that monasticism asks itself a serious question about its charisma. It is obvious that a "second birth" is required for the monasticism as a whole. It would not be good for Christianity, or for the Church, that the yeast of monastic charisma is lost in the worldly dough (services). Monastic orders are called to tread the way back to God with their lives.
