Abstract
Pope John Paul the Second, more than any other pope, has moved culture to the centre of evangelisation. His words "Faith which does not become culture is faith which is not received fully, not assimilated entirely, not lived faithfully", is probably the clearest official Church statement on the relationship between faith and culture. Christianity is not a book religion but a religion close to people and Christian faith can only be expressed and lived through a human culture. The pluralistic view of culture is relatively recent and the Catholic Church did not adopt such a notion until the middle of the twentieth century. The new term which is in use today, namely that of "inculturation" means the ongoing dialogue between faith and culture of rather the profound evangelisation of a people in their culture. Cultural change is slow, but it can be steady if our purpose is clear and our nerves are strong. Evangelising culture relies on deep insight into the mysteries of our faith and a keen vision for understanding the basis of our culture. The dialogue between Catholic faith and culture begins in the heart of every Christian who lives for both faith and country.
