Abstract
The Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) emphasized that humans are by their origin invited to dialogue with God. Many contemporaries, however, don't get this intimate and loving relationship with God or reject it outrightly. Atheism needs to be considered and seriously engaged. The article presents various forms of atheism: explicit denial of God, belief that nothing can be known about God, questioning God by using methodologies which a priori make an inquiry meaningless. Many exceed the area of empirical science and declare that everything is only the subject of such scientific research, or, conversely, they reject any possibility of an absolute truth. The Church, in fidelity to God as to humans, cannot help but painfully analyze those pernicious doctrines and measures which contradict reason and general human experience. However, the Church seeks to grasp the reasons for denying God that lie deeper in the atheistic mentality and, aware of the weight of the questions raised by atheism and for the sake of love for all people, believes that these reasons are serious and more thorough need to be checked.
