Abstract

The paper treats the crisis and the relevance of religious orders to the present situation. Much uncertainty has been brought about either by abandoning some valuable traditions or by clutching at the past. At the same time there are evident endeavours of religious orders, who are involved in renewal and in setting themselves new tasks in the spirit of the Gospel and of their founders. Fidelity to the charisma includes creativity and ingenuity. Religious orders play an irreplaceable role in building a more divine and thereby a more human world. They have always been cells of Christian renewal and prayer communities and have helped in the needs of their times. Monks and nuns retreat from the world only to be present in it even more efficiently. A necessary and right adjustment to the circumstances should be distinguished from the wrong conformity to the world and its spirit. In the final section, present priority tasks of religious orders are enumerated.
