Abstract

The new cultural context of liberalization in Europe calls for a new way of living and preaching Christianity. The most necessary thing is not so much to inform about and teach the doctrine of faith and to structure the ways of preaching, but to give testimony and offer faith by one’s life. This requires a catechesis that is missionary from its very beginning. The meeting of the European groups of catechists (EEC) entitled The Missionary Shift of Catechesis looked for an appropriate response to the situation and centred catechetic activity on the necessity of a kerygmatic approach, on the introduction of a catechumen itinerary and on the search for suitable forms of catechesis in view of the concrete conditions. The conference enabled its participants to exchange examples of »good practice« within various social-religious milieus in Europe, which did not give responses but raised questions that must be answered by each catechetic institution for its own conditions and by each catechist for his pupils. The catechist will better show Christ’s reality by his life than by his methods and teaching aids. If he is not burning with his faith, how will his preaching and catechesis be able to fire others with it?!
