Abstract

This paper was the theoretical basis of a lecture given at the theological-pastoral course in all Slovenian dioceses at the beginning of the pastoral year 2011, which was proclaimed by the Slovenian Bishops’ Conference as the year of the social teaching of the Church. The first part deals with the question about what the social teaching of the Church is and what it is not and with the emphases it has experienced during the more than one hundred years of its development. The main part of the paper presents the propositions developed by the Swiss philosopher Gabriel Fragnière in his book La religione e il potere: he shows the development of the distinction between the worldly and the spiritual power from the beginnings of Christianity up to the modern era. In this connection, it is an important thought that Jesus’ attitude towards authority can be understood as the starting point of the development of the secular society. On this basis it is described in the last part of the paper which models of the response of religion to social conditions have developed during the two thousand years of Church history and where the Church in the modern secular world should see its chance for a more personal and less traditional faith. These are some paradigm shifts that ought to be considered by pastoral practice.
