Abstract

In this master thesis I have examined the relationship between high school-age youth and the Church. Documents of the Second Vatican Council and papal speeches after the Council show the Church sees in youth first and foremost the potential to evangelize other people, particularly their peers. The Pridite in poglejte (Come and See) and the Concluding Document of the Plenary Council of the Church in Slovenia serve as the basis for my presentation of the view of the Church in Slovenia on youth ministry. An interview with a lay person who has extensive experience in this area and an interview with a parish priest who meets young people on a regular basis have given me a practical insight into youth ministry. I present an overview of youth ministry as well as the values and views of young people on their faith, the Church and priests, based mostly on a survey. There are areas of resonance between the Church and youth as well as areas that need improvement. In the second part of the work I focus on the role of catechesis in the Church and how it can bring the Church closer to the young. The Church faces the challenge of brining itself up to date, as has been perceived by the Second Vatican Council. The same is true of catechesis. I therefore try to discern the direction for possible development of catechesis in order to bring the Church and youth closer.
