Abstract

The inhabitants of the Roman Empire willingly absorbed new religious ideas that came to them from the territories conquered by Rome. Thus, a syncretic fusion of newly formed beliefs was created. And in view of the fact that Christianity was not ready to make compromises, it had no choice but to break through this syncretic fusion in order to survive. Christianity, being a forbidden religion (religio ilicita), fought its way through the proud philosophy and immoral religion of the Greeks, constantly defending itself against attacks and threats from enemies. This was the historical, religious and philosophical context in which Christian apologetics arose.
