The church is faced with a great challenge in former East Germany, particularly with respect to the effects of the rapid social-economic developments on young people. The church is called today to be a light to those youth disillusioned and disappointed by the radical changes there. In this society, the church is called to proclaim hope in the midst of rampant pessimism, distrust and cynicism. For what we see happening in the former East German state over the last few years goes deep into the mentality, psyche - yes, even the spirituality - of the people. These courageous people, who were the grassroots force behind the peaceful revolution overthrowing the communist regime in 1989, are not suffering from an identity crisis of severe proportions, a crisis that reveals a fundamental sickness of spirit.
