Abstract

The global missionary success of the charismatic and Neo-charismatic movements represents both a challenge and a threat for established churches. The charismatic and Neo-charismatic movements’ teachings are often not entirely confessionally acceptable and rely on varied, and not always identifiable resources. Similarly, they often rely on charismatic figures, who often back up their position or authority with references to visions or prophecies, and on structures that support the dynamic nature and efficiency of the movements, while also making them vulnerable to the abuse of authority. We believe that some of these attributes or their consequences correspond with the standard behaviour of new religious movements. This thesis will therefore search for a suitable model to describe the actions of these two movements. We will try to illustrate that these attributes are not sustainable for the movements in the long run and that even church communities that originated from these movements only rarely find them useful. Based on the models mentioned above, we will show the effects of the movements’ work, using specific examples. We will focus both on tension and division in traditional Protestant churches, and on the development of new church communities outside of established denominations. We will also analyse key topics as potential sources of tension or stabilization, and suggest potential ways to prevent tension, strife, and division between church denominations and their charismatic or Neo-charismatic missionary branches. As there was a great deal of material for analysis, the thesis includes a large addendum, containing original authentic documents and contributions illustrating the struggle for determining the form of worship in the studied communities. As such, this thesis presents the Czech context of Pentecostal charismatic Christian churches. The dynamics of their establishment and development have so far been rather understudied.
