Abstract

After two years of armed conflict in the East of Ukraine, the institution of the military clergy has fundamentally changed. In the recent period, not only the need for spiritual help, but also for spiritual leaders on the front lines has increased. The phenomenon of religious volunteerism became a factor in the renewal of military chaplaincy, as well as a return to an active model of social service in a religious environment. Together, this set the precedent for the future official Military Chaplaincy Service. Religious organizations, which before that showed principled pacifism, became active in military pastoral care and spiritual assistance to the army and volunteers. The problems of religious volunteering came to the fore, driving the problem of interfaith competition into the non-public sphere. Along with interreligious interaction, issues of war trauma, manifestations of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), psychological help and theological reinterpretation of war arose.
