Abstract

This chapter presents more than five years of active fieldwork focusing on restorative practices and peacebuilding initiatives in Ukraine during the active phase of armed conflict in the Donbas region of Ukraine. Field data consists of accounts by religious actors from different denominations who have joined interconfessional groups to talk about difficult topics, dilemmas, and possible cooperation on the ground. Their accounts provide a sense of lived religion and reveal intra-and inter-religious dynamics, which is helpful in exploring the role of religion in Ukraine and considering whether it can help resolve social tensions or not. The conditions created by the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine exacerbated many lines of polarization and division, which have vastly complicated cooperation. By understanding the different dynamics and competing aspirations, it is possible already during an active phase of war to analyze potential future developments and to see another possible role for religious organizations in civil society in the post-war recovery period. Peacebuilding has already started in Ukraine among Ukrainians as an essential first step toward greater reconciliation.
