Abstract

In this chapter, Olena Bogdan, Denys Brylov and Tetiana Kalenychenko examine the case of Ukraine, a postcommunist country with a competing and religiously mixed society. They begin their analysis before and after the dramatic events of the Maidan Protest of 2013–2014, which brought considerable changes to the believers’ ratio of two major competing orthodox churches in Ukraine—those of Kyiv and Moscow Patriarchates. The chapter then moves on to an exploration of faith-based initiatives and welfare services offered today by major Christian organizations that encompass an overwhelming majority of the Ukrainian population. The chapter also focuses on the faith-based activism of the Muslim communities in Ukraine. Drawing on survey data, the chapter concludes by discussing how the general public perceives religion and religious organizations in Ukraine.
