The article examines the image of the Church as the people of God in the Holy Scriptures, as well as its reception in the Western ecclesiological traditions: Catholic, Protestant ecumenical and evangelical. The author gives a brief overview of the biblical teaching about God's people, highlighting its main components and implications for ecclesiology. Special attention is paid to the issue of the role of images for understanding the essence and mission of the Church. Also, the reasons for the attractiveness of the image of the people of God for theologians and its active use in ecclesiological documents of Western traditions are being clarified. The article concludes by tracing possible implications for Baptist ecclesiology.
