In Gospel theology, the dominant approach to interpreting the meaning of the death of Christ is the theory of punitive substitution - a theory that causes numerous criticism and rejection both among many Christians and among unbelievers, becoming an unnecessary obstacle for them in accepting the Gospel. This article reveals the serious conceptual, theological and moral problems of this popular view and the key theological ideas of its foundation. After analyzing and criticizing this approach, the author offers an alternative view of understanding the meaning of the sacrifice of Christ. The last part of the work presents several important aspects of the relationship between our understanding of the atonement and the mission of the church.
