Abstract

Since the second century C.E., Christian communities has asserted St. Cyprian's theological statement: Extra ecclesiam nulla salus. After the age of intellectual skepticism, nihilist revolts, and the emergence of Christian realism, attempts to refer to the collective benevolence of communities led by their religious inspiration have been looked upon with suspicion. In the aftereffects of the grossest evils of the twentieth century, particularly of the Shoah and in the shadow of the twenty-first century's religiously justified acts of terror, claims of communal salvific values are even less credible. Russian Orthodox lay-theologian Alexei Khomiakov restated Cyprian's slogan in the metaphor included in the title, "Walking in the Dawn of the Light," referring to the calling of the local Christian community to witness for God's redemptive working. This research takes the cause of a redemptive communal vision and probes into its legitimacy and extent by addressing the implications of the corporate ethics of salvation. It builds on the experiential encounters with the realities of the Kingdom of God proclaimed by Jesus as a social program of renewal. Based on an inquiry into the kingdom vision as outlined in the gospel of Matthew, this work moves on to address the possibility of passing on Jesus' vision as historically embodied in the ecclesial practices of Christian communions and as theologically justified in the narrative of communal moral hermeneutics. It looks at the challenges of accommodationism (in the case of ethno-centered Orthodox ecclesial identity formed by community in power) and of supersessionism (in the case of Christian antisemitism) and seeks out patterns of redeeming the vision in ethical practices of Orthodox communities under suppression or stripped of political power. The work delves into a series of related inquiries into personal and communal historically extended narratives, particularly into Bulgaria's rescue of its Jews from the Nazi Shoah.
