Abstract

This contribution examines the document entitled Mission of the Orthodox Church in Today’s World – MOCT), one of six documents published by the Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church which took place in Crete in 2016. It is the first official Orthodox declaration related to mission. The aim of this paper is to analyse MOCT from the perspective of Protestant missiology. It is stated that MOCT perceives mission as a service of the Church provided to the world motivated by love. The paper analyses six main thematic areas of the document, namely human dignity, freedom and responsibility, peace and justice, peace and resistance to war, the attitude of the Church towards discrimination, and the mission of the Orthodox Church as a testimony of love through service. The aim of this paper is to provide constructive criticism of MOCT by analysing its positive impact and shortcomings. In the final part, it is stated that the new Orthodox document related to mission represents a valuable contribution to the ecumenical dialogue dedicated to mission and evangelization, despite certain shortcomings in the theological area.
