The Church at all times has struggled with two strong temptations: it can easily become a prisoner of culture (syncretism), or the opposite happens and it makes itself and the message it conveys culturally irrelevant. In an ecclesiastical setting, it is often associated with rhetoric about the postmodern and the notion of a post-Christian or post-God-seeking age. This has quite a few consequences. Perhaps most striking is that such address doesn’t really reach the people who see the world through a postmodern lens. It can also easily happen that everything they experience in the church removes them directly from the church. These are people for whom teaching of Scripture has no authority. It is likely that they were never convinced of the truth of the Bible's statements. We have the opportunity to be an ally of culture so that we can better understand and learn its language. At the same time, one should not shy away from the “Christ Against Culture” behavior when the situation requires it. There are two great dangers lurking for the church in the face of encounter with culture (the world): irrelevance and immersion in syncretism. Newbigin sees it as the latter of the two that haunts the churches of the post-modern West: "[…] Instead of confronting culture with the gospel, we endlessly try to adapt the gospel to culture." The symbiosis between church and culture customary in modernism is, in fact, a dead end for the church. The church becomes a cultural prisoner and nullifies the possibility of missionary encounters. The church should not adapt (by reducing and making the gospel digestible) but should offer an alternative. Newbigin frees the church from its captivity developed during modernity.
