On the basis of an authentic Orthodox reflection on the categories of desert and society, the author begins with an assumption that the monastic hermit ascetism is not conditioned by the mere fact of a geographical displacement but it could be understood in a more authentic way. Desert is a name for every part of God's creation that exists in an autonomous way, outside of communion with God. Asceticism is therefore a priestly service of God's sons who are immortalizing God's creation by bringing it back to communion with God for which it was created. The author is emphasizing the theurgical-cosmic dimension of ascetism. Therefore the meaning and goal of asceticism today is that all civilizational "deserts", every aspect of human life that exists without God be returned to that community with God.
