"Christian mission is the action of the body of Christ in the history of humankind." This statement contains tensions in itself. On the one hand mission is an immanent characteristic of the church as the body of Christ according to his words: "but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses... to the end of the earth" (Acts 1:8). On the other hand this action is always shaped (and covered) by the events and processes of the human history. Dealing with the past and the future of mission we always have to realize the concrete effects of this tension in our evaluation, and we also must take it into consideration in our approach to either a personal or a common understanding of witness for the future. This experience encourages us to search for further aspects of mission so that we can get a broader understanding of the past that contains values as well as sins, and also enlarge our view of the common tasks and directions for the future. Repentance and hope, concepts found in the theme of the Eight Assembly of the World Council of Churches, Turn to God - rejoice in hope, are two of these challenging aspects that have favoured the motivation for mission during the whole of church history.
