Abstract

(From the introduction to the article) "In this article I try to present an Orthodox perspective on secularity, secularisation and secularism by formulating, in the first part, a few general principles on these issues that might be accepted by all Orthodox living in different contexts today. In the second part, I refer to Romania, my home country, as a secularised context in Europe, describing and analysing its specificities both in the communist period and in the post-communist time, mainly as I perceive it at a personal level. This self-imposed restriction is necessary because there is a large diversity of "secularised contexts" in the Orthodox world caused by different contexts, so they cannot be all properly presented here

Additional Information: This volume deals with religion and church today, in light of the secularized contexts in Europe. It challenges the church to let its imagination be captured by the directions in which Western European societies are headed, and to rethink its mission accordingly. New situations everywhere demand careful study. The book prompts the church to retell and recast the meaning of the gospel in different contexts for the present age, and offers a sensitive, nuanced exploration of this new frontier for Christian mission. At one and the same time, contextually informed, richly textured, and theologically profound.
