Abstract

On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, this article proposes to investigate and evaluate the mutual influence of the Reformers and the Orthodox in the area of mission, as well as dialogue with non-Christian peoples more generally. We point out that from the very beginning the relations of the reforming West with the Orthodox East were established in the context of theological dialogue and interdenominational diplomacy. After outlining the interest in mission shown by the most prominent Reformers in their own historical context, we come to a more direct connection of the two sides in the field of missionary activity, highlighting the three main phases to be distinguished here. The first phase of relations (in the 19th century) refers chiefly to the Protestant view of the Orthodox, and especially the Greek, world as a mission field above all. The second phase corresponds to the emergence in Greece during the 20th century of interest in missionary activity, now from the point of view of missionaries themselves, linked, besides wider historical factors, with the encounter of the better-organized Protestant missions in international conferences, which in turn promoted a greater level of collaboration and unity among all those engaged in missionary agencies. The third phase is connected with the development of the ecumenical movement and corresponds to a more ecumenical understanding of mission, in which all sides now come together on different terms, as fellow workers in the service of the Gospel. As the world becomes a globalised village, as we meet and communicate with each other continually in the context of ecumenical dialogue, just as at the academic level specialists in the field of Missiology are able to share their concerns beyond confessional constraints, the future seems to be open – not to be sure without its challenges and in full recognition of the limitations imposed by history itself – to the possibility of greater cooperation and a contemporary cultivation of unity and witness in the coming decades.
