Abstract

The Old Testament story of Jonah deals with the adventure of the prophet because of his disobedience and rebellion to God. At the same time, it raises the issue of the exclusivity of the salvation of a rich people on the one hand and God's desire for the salvation of all his creatures, in the present case of the Ninevites, on the other. The story of Jonah had a global impact and spread, it was loved and adopted, transformed and rewritten again and again in the context of different religions and cultures. This article examines its adoption in the field of literature but also in the context of the great religious traditions: Judaism, Islam and Christianity, especially the Orthodox Patriarchal tradition. If the story of Jonah is so moving, it may be because of the taste and the request for universal salvation. The antinomy of this desire on the one hand and the limitation of salvation to strictly defined boundaries of specific religious or national communities constitutes precisely the issue under consideration, with the story of Jonah as its center and occasion. The multiplicity of the reception of the book leads to a variety of responses in the history of civilizations. Finally, from the point of view of Orthodox theology, the missionary question of salvation beyond the usual limits of our thinking and mentality, but also the content of obedience to God's will in relation to universal salvation, is raised based on the book of Jonah.
