Abstract
Based on a series of biblical and patristic testimonies, the study presents the meaning given to suffering and martyrdom in Christianity. The martyrs confess to the truth of the Gospel through their suffering and by sacrificing their lives following the example of Christ. Suffering is inevitable in the mission of the Church; however the Church does not recommend seeking a martyr’s death, because an effective Christian witness can also be given by an authentic Christian life, in pursuit of holiness.
