The issue of a missionary theology of the Old Testament was put in discussion starting with the 20th century. The debates concerning the missio Dei concept favored the development of the theme, because if God has a ”missionary” nature, He is then ”missionary” from the eternity, so the missiology cannot elude the Old Testament history and theology. On the other hand, the concepts of missio Dei generalis and misio Dei specialis, that is, the immediate mission of God in the world and the mediate one, through His sent ones, are to be found in many of the Old Testament stories. Moreover, the creation of the human being in the “God’s image and likeness” is the first missionary premise of the Holy Bible. If God is a missionary God, then the man created in His image is a missionary being too, he is a homo missum. And since the image of God is in fact the image of Christ, the ultimate Sent One, every man has this basic quality of being sent too. But the image of God is a gift, while the likeness is a purpose, a mission. The foundation and the goal of the human mission meet each other in the Christology. Created in the image of Christ, every human being has the mission to attain His likeness, through the theosis, the final goal of man’s mission.
