Abstract

The paper examines the complex interplay of religiosity and identity during the early years of the Soviet Union, with a focus on the state-led campaign to confiscate religious artifacts. Through the case study of Dmitri Timofeivich Chernov's interrogation in 1922, the author explores how the confiscation measures impacted the Orthodox Church, religious practices, and individual believers' identities, amidst a backdrop of societal upheaval and state violence. The study draws on a wide range of primary and secondary sources to present new insights into the lived experiences of believers during this tumultuous period.
