This article examines the encounter between two types of time as they play out in the mission of the church. It suggests that mission happens within this double time framework, both chronological, measured by the clock, and kairological, the eschatological moment when Christ irrupts into our world and transforms irrevocably the life of the believing community. The article looks briefly at the mission journals of two missionaries, near contemporaries, but living in different circumstances and from two very diverse traditions. One is the English Baptist, William Carey, in India. The other is St Innocent (Ivan) Veniaminov, a Russian Orthodox missionary in Alaska. In examining their journals, it will be shown that mission is about both waiting and about being ready to seize the moment.
