Abstract

Gyula Forgács (1879-1941), a pastor of the Reformed Church in Hungary, was a major pioneer of missionary work and its theory and strategy in this country. Based on rich primary material, his person, his spirituality and his work are thoroughly worked out and many important influences from Germany, Scotland and Holland, which are important for the Hungarian missionary movement, are made visible. The dissertation, written for the University of Utrecht in German, clearly reveals the sometimes dramatic network of relationships that emerged between representatives of a theology of revival rooted in local congregations and local associations and the constraints imposed on individuals at the level of the universal church and its governing bodies. For German readers, a significant and hitherto little-known part of Hungarian church history is traced here in a moving and understandable way.
