This paper examines the work of British missionary and educationalist Adeline Paulina Irby (1831-1911) in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) during the declining years of the Ottoman Empire. While regional changes in the first half of the 19th century such as the formal establishment of the Principality of Serbia (1830) and the Imperial Reform Edict (1856) opened new opportunities for education among the Christian citizens of BiH, the educational movement took hold more deeply and broadly because of the contribution of missionaries like Miss Irby. Not only did she support the emerging desire for advancement through education, she also advocated for female literacy and education. While this paper focuses on Miss Irby’s work, the influence of other Protestant missionary organizations like The British and Foreign Bible Society can be seen through her story. Without inspiration from the Protestant Deaconesses Institutionat Kaiserswerth and support from the broader philanthropic movement of Protestants in Britain, perhaps the educational work of Adeline Paulina Irby and her friends would not have taken root. Yet, it did take root and flower into something that is remembered and celebrated in Bosnia-Herzegovina even today.
