Although history of religion is naturally attributed to Christianity, Christianity has only been identified with religion when it began to penetrate into the world of Latin culture, at the close of the second century after Christ, in the apostolic writings of Q.S.F. Tertuliana. In his Apologetics, in confronting Christianity with philosophy and traditional Roman religion, we first meet the notion of religio applied to one's understanding of Christianity as a whole of Christian doctrine and lifestyle. The first and second chapters of the thesis deal with the historical context that has led Christians to define their own identities through the category of religio, and the concept and role of religio in Latin Latin culture. The core of the study is the third and fourth chapters, devoted to the definition of Christian identity in Tertullian's Apologetics and the religion category in this and other writings of this Latin theologian.
