Abstract

Two metaphors have directed much missiological thinking in the modern period: ‘expansion’, during the period of European colonialism; and ‘accompaniment’, in the post-colonial movements and rapid changes in the second half of the twentieth century. The author suggests that ‘reconciliation’ may be a compelling metaphor for the first part of the twenty-first century, as the world grapples with the challenges of reconstruction after civil conflict, the enduring effects of the Communist period in central and eastern Europe, and the deep ambiguities wrought by globalization. The basic characteristics of the Christian understanding of reconciliation are then presented, with a proposed praxis of building communities of memory and hope.
