Mission is first and foremost God’s mission. And the prime agent of the missio Dei is the Holy Spirit... Personal experience of the Spirit fosters mission. This is what the New Testament claims, and this is what most of us Christians believe... But what about the history of the Mennonite Brethren churches? Were those churches born in times of spiritual revival? Is their mission motivated by the Spirit of God? What is the correlation between spirituality and mission in the story? By turning to the early history of the Mennonite Brethren church, which claims to have been born in spiritual revival, I will try to give answers to these questions in this essay. The revival in South Russia was in all regards the turning point for German Protestants in Russia. This was especially true for the Mennonite churches in the region.
