Abstract

In the last decade, the indigenous peoples of the North have become the object of close attention from Protestant missionaries, who became active throughout Russia after the collapse of the Soviet system. In Yamal, such missionary activity affects the life of not only cities, but also the most remote northern villages, as well as the tundra nomadic population (represented in Yamal mainly by the Nenets). Thus, a new stage in the process of interaction between European culture (now in its Christian-Protestant version) and the traditional culture of the indigenous peoples of the North begins. Such interaction is especially intense in Yamal, and today the influence of Protestant missionary work on the traditional culture of the Yamal Nenets cannot be underestimated. Many Nenets, both village and tundra, accept Christianity (similar processes are observed among European Nenets [Vallikivi 2001]). Mass religious conversion becomes the basis for thinking about the possible (in)compatibility of traditional Nenets culture and the “new faith.” A similar question arises both before the Nenets themselves and before Protestant missionaries. The missionary environment carries out its own complex work of interpreting Nenets traditional culture and religion. Here, various schemes are being implemented for the possible preservation and addition of the transformation of traditional culture in the conditions of Christianization.
